“I did not kill her!” The young man had blood on his hands, a look of horror on his face.

The villagers surrounded him, makeshift weapons in their hands.

With plague stalking the land, retribution was swift and brutal. They dragged him to an oak tree and strung him up.

He died protesting his innocence.

By the time someone noticed the large animal tracks and trail of blood that led deep into the woods, the strange, glittering light was already fading.

They cut the body down and buried the man in the churchyard and never spoke of his death again.
